The Cleveland State men’s soccer team holds an overall record of 2-4-3 (.389), and a conference record of 0-2-1 (.167), after falling short to Horizon League competitor Green Bay. The game took place late Saturday afternoon on September 28, with 207 in attendance at Aldo Santaga Stadium . As it stands, the Vikings are currently 9th place in the Horizon League.
Green Bay took advantage early in the game, scoring off of a cross in the third minute to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. Although the Vikings were aggressive leading into intermission, leading in goal attempts (4-3), the score remained.
The Phoenix picked up where they left off after half-time, scoring yet another goal to double their lead 2-0 in the early minutes of the second half. Cleveland State freshman, Matteo Correia responded, ending the Vikings scoring drought in the 61st minute of play off of a pass from freshman, Stefan Velickovic. In the minutes to follow, Green Bay was forced to play with one less player, after receiving a red card.
Cleveland State was able to tie things up in the 73rd minute, off a pass from graduate student Bojan Kolevski that allowed senior Marko Rimac to score. In response, Green Bay furrowed in a goal to break the tie in the 83rd minute, which would give the Phoenix a 3-2 win.
Player Highlights: Marco Rimac lead the team in shot, with 6 and 4 on the frame; Ryan Poling finished the game with five saves, and made his season debut in goal; Stefan Velickovic, Bojan Kolevski and Matteo Correia all finished with a shot on the board.
The Vikings will be on the road for their next game, taking on Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.
