On Feb. 11, Cleveland State University President Laura Bloomberg sent an email to the campus community addressing student questions over the release of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
In her email, Dr. Bloomberg stated CSU offices have been in direct contact with students who may be affected by federal executive orders on visas. The Office of the Provost has provided recent information on steps to take if you see an ICE agent on campus. However, Dr. Bloomberg states there is no reason to believe that agents would be on campus.
Dr. Bloomberg listed precautions to take if you have an interaction with ICE. Importantly, it is not your responsibility to respond to an agent’s request. When seeing an agent, direct them to the General Counsel located in the Administration Center, Room 327. If it’s outside regular business hours, direct them to CSU police.
ICE is legally allowed to enter public spaces without a warrant. This includes the Michael Schwartz Library, the Viking Outfitters bookstore, the Student Center, outside spaces on campus and all facilities that are open to the public during business hours. Public spaces include classrooms in session, residence hall rooms and faculty offices.
Dr. Bloomberg notes not to intervene with an ICE agent under any circumstances. Guidelines will be updated as further information is provided.
If you feel an ICE agent on campus does not have the right to be there, contact CSU police or the Office of General Counsel. If you have any questions or concerns about international student and staff information or documentation, please reference the Center for International Services and Programs.
