
Cleveland State men’s tennis kicked off their 2023 season on a strong note this weekend at the YSU Invitational and ITA All-American Championship, with matches taking place on Friday, Sep. 29th and Sunday, Oct. 1st.
Senior Mikael Erler traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma for his third appearance in the All-American tournament, making it CSU’s fifth time being represented. He went 1-1 in the pre-qualifiers draw, gaining a 6-1, 6-4 win over Oklahoma State and losing 6-0, 6-2 to Middle Tennessee State.
The rest of the CSU team participated in the YSU Invite, which began at 9 a.m. in Youngstown on both days.
The Vikings won seven singles matches from Austin Staiger, Alan Matyjas, JuandeDios Abboud, Cole Chappell and Nico Jamison. The team also went undefeated in their doubles matches Saturday, with Carl Gredlitschka and Abboud winning 6-0, Devin Boyer and Jamison 6-4, Chappell and Staiger 6-3, and Matyjas and Andrew Zimcosky 6-2.
The team closes out the first of four weekends that the Vikings will be at play.
CSU men’s tennis will next be in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the ITA Midwest Regionals, starting Thursday Oct. 19th through Monday Oct. 23rd.
