Despite the subtle nature of the smaller moments in our lives, they are esoterically among the most profound. The warm whirl of spring air in the early morning, a familiar shadow that casts upon the floors at dusk, or the dance of colors that flood the evening sky. These phenomena overwhelm our intelligence and intellect, which bring about a fleeting moment of transcendence that allows us to surpass our own. It is these luminous experiences that format a sense of assurance found in the awareness of reality.

The wondrous qualities that come in the least expected of time frames are beyond articulation. To describe these moments, we often will attempt to use metaphors, for no single word can convey the inexplicable feeling at hand. In pursuit to do so, we fall short, for we ourselves cannot fully conceptualize the very essence of what it is that creates this sense of intense pleasure. An individual in this state has many contradictory perceptions that confuse the senses. One can feel both nanoscopic and mammoth-like, or, in different terms, one part to a larger whole. Ultimately, it shifts focus to something beyond ourselves, which inturn creates a sense of internal alignment. It essentially triggers a stirring, emanated in abstract comfort, which may be best represented in the painting of early impressionists. In the end, one will often be left with a profound feeling that stimulates and exceeds the typical human experience, preceding comprehension.

The fleeting and mysterious nature of these moments is where the beauty lies. The seldom experience of transcendence creates a deep appreciation of the very essence. If it were in abundance, it would lose meaning, just as if an individual celebrated their birthday regularly—it would eventually become insignificant. It is truly remarkable because of its ephemeral nature. To add on, there is great wonder in the confusion that these moments construct. We cannot be certain as to why a particular experience creates a sense of comfort, joy, or sorrow. If we knew, however, it would destroy its alluring beauty. It is the possibility of multiple interpretations that sparks wonder, and leaves one with nothing but the sensations they cultivated, that make it unique to each individual experience.

In search of answers as to why something so simple can produce such profound emotions, I was asked to look at a particular painting and distinguish the cause. After looking at it inquisitively and reflecting upon the question, it became apparent that it was a mystery, as there was no way to absolutely know the cause. For there are multiple parts to the whole, and many interpretations. I was assured that if we knew for certain what made the painting appealing, the mystery, light, and wonder would vanish.

The beauty is the mystery, and the mystery lies within the small moments. They are not to be taken in abundance, but appreciated for their fickle, mysterious, and extraordinary nature.
