Ohio avoided the wrath of Hurricane Helene, but that doesn’t mean Cleveland residents weren’t affected.

Hurricane Helene left behind nearly 400 miles of destruction in its rampage across the south, hitting the Big Bend region with 140 mile-per-hour winds. The death toll has reached a staggering 227, with more bodies still being discovered. The storm has also done between $30.5 billion and 47.5 billion in damage, displacing countless families.

CSU students with friends and family in the south are worried for the safety of their loved ones, and may have to take on the financial burden of supporting those they care about in the region.

What can CSU students do as Ohio residents to help victims of Hurricane Helene? Below is a list of resources for those who want to donate their time or money to further emergency disaster relief:

Rush Emergency Support has options for both one-time and monthly payments to fund the deliveries of medicine, supplies and emergency funding to victims of Hurricane Helene and other worldwide disasters.

The American Red Cross allows donations between $10 and $1000 that go directly to relief for victims of Hurricane Helene.

Charity Watch is one of multiple organizations that provides information on different charities to help differentiate between genuine organizations and scams to make sure those trying to help can ensure their money goes to the people who need it. It is crucial to look into a charity before donating, especially for college students with limited resources.

Donating money isn’t the only way to help out. The American Red Cross is requesting shelter volunteers, blood donor ambassadors, and blood transportation specialists. Donating blood is a good option for those who want to help, but don’t have the money to donate or time to volunteer.

You can schedule an appointment to donate blood or plasma at the Cleveland Blood, Platelet and Plasma Donation Center, less than a mile from campus.

Anyone looking to be more hands on and donate their time can apply as a Hurricane Helene Relief Volunteer with All Hands and Hearts. Multiple Central Ohio Businesses have set up drives to support victims by supplying water, diapers, and other supplies to those in need. Working with businesses in Cleveland to set up a local drive is also an option if you’re passionate about wanting to help.
